Our Story

MyDirectives began in 2007 with a deeply personal experience.

After watching his grandmother experience a difficult end of life, MyDirectives founder Scott Brown and his wife, Géraldine, began thinking about his own mother's future. She was living with multiple sclerosis, and they wanted to make sure her healthcare decisions would be known and available if she was ever unable to communicate them herself.

They believed there had to be a better way.
That experience helped inspire MyDirectives and a simple idea that still guides us today: people should be able to make their healthcare decisions known and have those decisions available when they're needed.

From an Idea to a Mission

As MyDirectives began to take shape, it became clear that helping someone create an advance directive was only part of the challenge.

An advance directive can't help guide your care if it's at home when you're taken to the hospital, if no one knows it exists, or if the healthcare professionals caring for you can't access it.

So the mission grew beyond helping people create and store documents. Over two decades, we've built the technology and connections needed to help make advance care planning information available throughout the healthcare system.

Today, MyDirectives connects people and their healthcare decisions with healthcare organizations and the systems clinicians use every day, helping make those decisions available when and where they're needed.

Behind all that technology is something very human: a person who took the time to make their decisions known, a family that shouldn't have to guess, and a healthcare professional trying to provide the right care at the right time.

Two Decades Later

Years after MyDirectives began, Scott's mother became seriously ill. Her advance directive and medical orders were available through MyDirectives. Her family understood her decisions, and the healthcare professionals caring for her had access to the information they needed.

When she passed away in 2025, she was at home with her family, receiving the care she had chosen. Surrounded by dignity. Surrounded by peace. Surrounded by love.

Years later, the mission that inspired MyDirectives had come full circle.

Healthcare and technology have changed considerably since 2007. Our mission hasn't.

We're still working toward a future where everyone can make their healthcare decisions known, where families don't have to guess, and where healthcare professionals can access the information they need to honor those decisions.
